Beginner Crochet Dishcloth Pattern

This beginner dishcloth uses single crochet for a dense, washable fabric. It is designed as a practice project with a predictable stitch count. Use cotton yarn because it absorbs water better than acrylic and handles regular washing well.

Finished size

About 8 inches square with worsted cotton and a 5 mm hook.

Materials

  • Worsted cotton yarn, about 60–80 yards
  • 5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Abbreviations

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • st = stitch

Starting chain and stitch count

Ch 31. Work into the second chain from the hook. Each row has 30 single crochet stitches.

Pattern

  1. Row 1: Sc in the second ch from hook and in each ch across. Count 30 sc.
  2. Rows 2–30: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across. Count 30 sc on every row.
  3. After Row 30, do not cut the yarn if you want to add the border.

Simple border

Ch 1. Work one round of single crochet around the dishcloth. Put 3 sc in each corner. Work one sc into each stitch across the top and bottom. Along the side edges, work one sc into the end of each row. Join with a slip stitch to the first border stitch and fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in both yarn tails securely. Cotton ends can work loose if they are only tucked under a few stitches, so weave in one direction, then turn and weave back through nearby stitches. Trim the tails close after the cloth has relaxed.

Helpful checks

The dishcloth should have 30 rows and 30 stitches per row before the border. If it is wider than it is tall, your row height may be short; add a few more rows until it looks square. If it is taller than it is wide, stop earlier. The exact size is less important than a neat, even fabric.

This pattern is also useful as a tension exercise. Make one dishcloth slowly, counting carefully. Make another without stopping as often. You will begin to notice how your hands control stitch size.

Use this same structure for a larger cloth by adding chains and rows evenly. For example, a 36-stitch width needs about 36 rows before the border. Keep the border relaxed, especially after washing cotton yarn.
