Easy Crochet Headband Pattern
This easy crochet headband is a narrow rectangle joined into a loop. It is a useful beginner project because it teaches even rows, measuring for fit, and sewing a clean seam. The pattern uses half double crochet for a soft, slightly stretchy fabric.
Finished size
About 3.5 inches wide. Length is adjusted to fit the head comfortably.
Materials
- Medium weight yarn
- 5 mm crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Measuring tape
Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- hdc = half double crochet
- st = stitch
Starting chain and stitch count
Ch 12. Work the first stitch into the third chain from the hook. Each row has 10 half double crochet stitches.
Pattern
- Row 1: Hdc in the third ch from hook and in each ch across. Count 10 hdc.
- Row 2: Ch 2, turn. Hdc in each st across. Count 10 hdc.
- Repeat Row 2 until the strip measures about 18 to 20 inches, or about 1 inch shorter than the head measurement for a gentle fit.
Joining
Bring the short ends together, making sure the strip is not twisted. Use the yarn tail and a yarn needle to sew the ends together through matching stitches. Sew across the seam twice if the headband will be worn often.
Finishing
Weave the yarn tail along the inside of the headband. Try the headband on and check the seam. If it feels too loose, undo the seam and remove a few rows before joining again. If it feels too tight, add two to four rows and recheck.
Beginner notes
Half double crochet has three loops at the top, so take a moment to identify the front and back loops before starting each row. The turning chain gives height and is not counted as a stitch in this beginner version. Always work 10 hdc across to keep the edges straight.
For a simple variation, use a contrasting color for the last two rows before joining. This adds interest without changing the construction.
Because head sizes vary, measuring matters more than following a fixed row number. Crochet fabric stretches with wear, so a headband that feels gently snug at first usually fits better than one that is already loose before wearing.
